How to spot a fake 50% off

Most “half off” signs are doing math you would not do at the register. Use this, then grab the one-page checklist.

  1. Unit price beats the headline %.
    40% off a 12-oz bottle can still cost more per ounce than the store brand.
  2. “Was $X” needs a history, not a strikethrough.
    If it was never really $X, the discount is theater.
  3. Limited time with no date is not limited.
    No end date and no stock count means it can sit there forever.
